Our Plan: Reduce the Meat in our Diet

April 16th, 2008 by rickt99

We have a plan. A good one. Mostly, we think that it’s a good one because we’ve never really had a plan before, and so we don’t have much in the way of yardsticks with which we can measure. But we’ll cover that matter another time.

Our plan is simple: We are reducing the amount of meat that we consume. There you have it. That’s our plan.

The details are as follows:

·       Eating meat causes climate change.

·       Eating meat adversely affects our health.

There are probably more bullet points that we could come up with, but those two are plenty, in our estimation. You’ll notice that we are not entirely eliminating meat from our diets. Instead, we are reducing the amount and/or frequency of our consumption of the stuff. We think that’s a reasonable and practical thing to do.

With regard to the bullet points. The science is in, folks, and it’s starting to look like we have some “issues” to resolve. For example, there appears to be broad consensus among scientists (not the cranks) that the climate is changing in some important (bad) ways. What does that have to do with meat consumption? Well, it turns out that producing all of this meat takes quite a bit of energy—way more than most people realize. The bottom line is that by reducing meat consumption, we are, in our own small way, doing what we can to not make this problem worse than it already is. In fact, a reasonable person could argue that we should eliminate meat entirely from our diet. And that might be a valid argument, but we are not ready to do that. And by “we”, I mean, “me”.

My wife and I are in our forties. We are in a position where, for the first time in our lives, we are actually making choices (some of them are good ones) where our health, well being is a factor. We have been surprising ourselves, and each other with the amount of attention and energy that we spend on this stuff. It’s possible that it’s a function of age. Maybe that’s what people mean when they use the term “wisdom”. Or not. Maybe we are just hyper-sensitive to yet another lifestyle trend in fashionable, self-aware Silicon Valley.

Over time, we’ll know for sure. But our plan is that we’ll begin cutting back on the meat, initially by about twenty-five percent (25%). We think that slicing one quarter off won’t be difficult. Again, over time, we’ll know for sure.

Obviously, with Saladtopia being an important part of our lives, we are in a position that’s different than most people. We do, after all, spend quite a bit of time thinking about lettuce, dressings, and veggies. So it follows that we’d be good candidates for this type of self-imposed diet program. We’ll write about our efforts, and share what we can. Our hope is that others consider making similar choices, and sharing their experiences, as well.

Let the games begin.
